Up for sale, a 2005 Fender Mustang Bass model MD98-70SD in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Crafted in Japan (and long ago discontinued), this Mustang Bass is a faithful and discontinued reissue of the classic short scale Fender model with a factory installed split coil USA-made Seymour Duncan pickup.

Tonewoods include an alder body and a maple neck capped by a thick slab rosewood fretboard. There's a certain pluck and punch unique to this bass that's particularly appealing and sits well in a mix, with enough thump to fill out the low end nicely. It’s a bit more focused than a Precision Bass, offering good midrange heft and aggression. Weighing 7lbs 11oz, this Mustang Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .845” deep at the 1st fret and .990” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius, with dot inlay and stock slender fretwire. The frets are practically perfect, retaining their full factory height with well-rounded crowns, only showing a hint of wear on frets 1-4. This bass plays cleanly up the 30” scale length, with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 1/2“ in width, carved from bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock has a block “Mustang Bass” logo, and the clover-button tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The “Crafted in Japan” text and R-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.

The simple and straightforward electronics work as they should, with Master Volume and Tone controls to govern the split coil Seymour Duncan pickup. The chrome bridge and control plate have plenty of shine, and the white pearloid pickguard contrasts with the Fiesta Red gloss finish. Cosmetic wear limited to some minor dings along the lower bout body edge, pick scuffing extending to the bass-side body waist, and a handful of faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless.

A gigbag is included.
