Up for sale, a 2004 Modulus VJ4 Vintage J bass in showroom clean condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original case and factory paperwork. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Modulus Graphite began building exceptional handmade instruments in 1978. Specializing in innovative materials to better serve the needs of the serious player, Modulus pioneered the use of graphite in the construction of guitar and bass necks. Modulus production is sparingly small, and the company is currently producing only 4 instruments a month, with a price for the VJ4 model starting at $4199.99.The neck is a lightweight, ultra-rigid shell made from dozens of layers of aerospace grade epoxy-impregnated graphite fibers. With an amazing strength-to-weight ratio and a resonant peak far above the range of the notes on a bass, it is an ideal neck for producing crystal clear, even tones. Because graphite telegraphs attack more quickly than conventional wood necks, the Modulus neck aids articulation and is very sensitive to playing dynamics. Further adding to the sonic definition, the phenolic fingerboard delivers a clear tone and a tighter focus to the low end. The body is made of solid alder and the bass weighs 10lbs 2oz, delivering a natural sustain and punch with an even response across all strings. A pair of passive Villex Jazz pickups ensure a powerful bass register with distinct midrange fundamentals. The upper midrange cut, burp, and sweet growl one associates with a traditional Jazz Bass is at the player's fingertips, yet with a broader sonic spectrum and more immediate note attack. This Modulus has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with roundwound 45-100 strings, accurate intonation, and comfortable action. The graphite neck sports a slender D-shaped profile with good shoulder, measuring .799” deep at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th. The composite fretboard features mini pearloid dot inlay and pristine stock jumbo frets. The bass plays well in all registers up the straight neck and 34" scale, and the graphite nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The headstock features the stock set of chrome Modulus tuners that turn smoothly and hold pitch well.On the body, the passive electronics feature a traditional Jazz Bass control array with individual Volume controls for each pickup and two Tone knobs controlling High and Mid frequencies for both single coils. Hardware includes a Hipshot B Style bridge, and the chrome hardware is positively gleaming including the control plate and quartet of knurled knobs. The alder body sports a gloss three-tone Sunburst finish paired with a three-ply red tortoise pickguard. The graphite neck has a black pearloid appearance with large reflective flakes that catch the light. The original hardshell case, manual, and warranty card are included.
