Up for sale, a 2004 Marshall 1974X 1x12” combo amplifier Guitar Center 40th Anniversary Limited Edition in near-mint condition, loaded with a full suite of vintage Telefunken and Mullard tubes, complete with the original slip cover, owner’s manual, and footswitch. This is a fantastically faithful recreation of the original 1974X, carefully constructed to the exact point-to-point design of that legendary circuit, hand-soldered on tagboard with what Guitarist magazine described as “ultra-neat lacing, just like the originals.” This particular 1974X combo is one of just 40 such amps produced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Guitar Center, crafted under the direct oversight of Jim Marshall himself, and this amp has been upgraded with a Mercury Magnetics output transformer.
This iconic 18 watt combo is a dual-channel design, powered by a pair of EL84s, with footswitchable tube-driven tremolo on Channel One. As a 1974X should, the amp delivers fat cleans at lower volumes with dense harmonics, midrange richness and low end growl. Natural overdriven grit and British flavored sizzle and roar is on tap with the Volume pushed towards its limit, and the amp is ideally suited to diming out the controls and using one's guitar volume to coax out a range of dynamically responsive sounds. The channels have independent Volume and Tone controls, with Speed and Intensity knobs for the tube-driven Tremolo (footswitch included).
The tubes are all vintage valves, with a pair of well-matched Telefunken EL84s, a Mullard EZ81 rectifier, and a matched trio of Telefunked ECC83s in the preamp section.
The speaker is the classic Celestion Greenback T1221. The Greenbacks used in these recreations were exceedingly faithful to vintage spec, duplicating every critical parameter from winding lengths and edge treatment to using original dustcap material and adhesive. The speaker has also been “aged” to ensure that lived-in sound, with the magnetic flux matched to vintage reference, and the cone material was manufactured to be slightly more “pulpy” to effectively leap ahead 35 years and deliver soft, warm vintage tonalities straight out of the box.
Cosmetic touches include a plexi control panel, gold knobs, black tolex, and white piping on the salt and pepper grillcloth. The limited edition badge is present on the back of the enclosure. There are just a few minor marks and scuffs on the enclosure edges.
The original slip cover is included, along with the one-button wedge footswitch and the owner’s manual.
