Up for sale, a 2004 Fender '62 Telecaster Custom model TL62B-100BTX in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This Telecaster model was discontinued years ago, and upscale features include a genuine USA-made Bigsby B5F vibrato tailpiece and Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pickups (unlike the more common iteration of this model with Japanese single coils). Crafted in Japan, this Telecaster Custom is rarely seen outside its country of origin.
Tonewoods include a double bound alder body and a maple neck capped by a thick slab rosewood fretboard, ensuring a lively, balanced sound channeled faithfully by the Texas Special pickups. These single coils feature a slightly hotter wind than vintage spec, with black fiber bobbins and cloth-covered leads, delivering plenty of chewy twang and bridge position bite, with a sweet, full neck pickup that has plenty of clarity. This Tele weighs 8lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges and round shoulders, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4” radius and retains the stock slender fretwire. The frets have their full factory height, showing light wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-9. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock bone nut measures 42mm (1.650”) in width. On the headstock, the Kluson-style tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The “Crafted in Japan” text and Q-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
All of the electronics work as intended, with the Texas Specials wired to the stock harness and governed by a three-way selector switch with Master Volume and Tone controls. The chrome-plated flat-top knurled knobs, control plate, and bridge are notably clean, with just a faint speckling of patina on the saddles and Bigsby. The genuine, USA-made Bigsby B5F vibrato is smooth and responsive for surfy shimmies and warbles.
The gloss three-tone Sunburst finish is framed on the top and back by cream binding, with cosmetic wear limited to light buckle rash on the back central to the waist, faint finish checking adjacent to the Bigsby, and a scant few finish scratches on the body as a whole. The ambered gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean, with a pair of shallow marks on the carve behind frets 7-8 and that have no impact on playability.
A gigbag is included.
