Up for sale, a 2004 Fender ‘62 Telecaster Custom model TL62B-100BTX in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. The since-discontinued Telecaster model is an upscale iteration featuring a genuine USA-made Bigsby B5F vibrato tailpiece and a factory-installed pair of USA-made Fender Texas Special pickups. Produced for the Japanese domestic market, this “Crafted in Japan” Tele is rarely seen outside of its country of origin.

Tonewoods include a double bound alder body and a maple neck capped by a thick slab rosewood fretboard, ensuring a lively, balanced sound channeled faithfully by the Texas Special pickups. These single coils feature a slightly hotter wind than vintage spec, with black fiber bobbins and cloth-covered leads, delivering plenty of chewy twang and bridge position bite, with a full, throaty neck pickup that has plenty of clarity. This Tele weighs 8lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a moderately chunky C-shaped profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges and well-rounded shoulders, measuring .860” deep at the 1st fret and .980” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4” radius and flawless stock slender fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The stock nut measures 42mm (1.650”) in width, and on the headstock, the Kluson-style tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The “Crafted in Japan” text and Q-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.

All of the electronics work as intended, with the Texas Specials wired to the stock harness and governed by a three-way selector switch with Master Volume and Tone controls. The hardware all gleams like new, including the control plate, flat-topped knurled knobs, bridge with spiral saddles, and Bigsby. The genuine, USA-made Bigsby B5F vibrato is smooth and responsive for surfy shimmies and warbles. Plastics comprise the three-ply white pickguard, which has requisite scuffing on the treble side of the strum path.

The gloss Candy Apple Red finish is framed on top and back by cream binding, with cosmetic wear limited to a scant few minor nicks on the lower bout, as well as a handful of faint finish scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The smooth ambered gloss on the neck profile highlights subtle birdseye figuring in the maple and feels lightning fast in the palm, with a small fill on the treble-side shoulder at fret 10 that has been buffed smooth and is imperceptible to the palm.

A Fender Custom Shop padded softshell case is included.
