Up for sale, a 2003 Gibson Custom Shop ES-336-F figured top semi-hollowbody electric guitar in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and factory paperwork. Not to be confused with the 339 or other standard line ES models, the CS-336-F was a pioneering Gibson model upon its initial release in 2001, representing the Custom Shop's first "tonally carved" guitar, meaning that the back, center block, and sides are carved from one single piece of solid wood (mahogany).
Extremely clean with a gloss Cherry nitro lacquer finish, this Custom Shop CS-336 blends the tonal properties of a Les Paul and ES-335, scaling down the body of the latter and featuring semi-hollow construction with a carved one-piece mahogany back/sides/center block topped with a premium figured maple cap. With 57 Classic PAF pickups, the CS-336 has a smooth, airy treble response with a touch of growl and rich harmonic content. The maple top provides the articulation and attack for which that particular tone wood is known, while the one-piece mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck, and rosewood fretboard add inherent warmth and girth to the sound. In the neck position, this CS-336 delivers a sweetness and bell-like top end that's great for retaining clarity on solos and complex rhythm work. Featherweight at 6lbs 10oz, we've setup this Custom Shop Gibson here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The mahogany neck has a medium C profile carve with generous shoulder and a hair more depth as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .845" deep at the 1st fret and .940" at the 12th. The original fretwire is flawless on the bound rosewood fretboard, and the guitar plays easily up the 24 3/4" scale length. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the stock Gibson Deluxe Kluson-style tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well with greened keystone buttons and vintage-style push-in tuner bushings. The five digit CS-prefix serial and Custom Shop badge are present on the back of the headstock.
The electronics are untouched, with clean PAF stickers on the baseplates of both 57 Classic humbuckers, each governed by dedicated Volume and Tone knobs. The nickel hardware shows light patina on the pickup covers, original ABR-1 bridge, and upgraded locking TonePros stopbar tailpiece. The plastic parts are equally as clean, with a quartet of deeply ambered bonnet knobs and the original five-ply pickguard which shows some requisite light pick scuffing.
The Cherry gloss nitro lacquer finish highlights ripples of dimensional bookmatched figuring in the flame maple across the top, and wear is limited to one small (and difficult to spot) repaired split in the maple top between the treble side F hole and bridge Tone control, and a tiny ding on top behind the stopbar. There are just a few exceedingly faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the back, and the gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
The original black tolex Custom Shop hardshell case is included, along with the original warranty pamphlet and custom care guide.
