Up for sale, a 2002 Tokai Love Rock electric guitar in perfect working order. A modern flame top iteration of the LP Standard platform crafted in Japan, this Tokai boasts zebra coil Gotoh humbuckers and the classic tonewood combination of a figured maple top and a solid mahogany body. The rich warmth of mahogany and the articulation and note attack of maple translate well through the Gotoh pickups with a range of defined, clear tonalities that have ample muscle. Weighing 9lbs 7oz, we've had this Tokai professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action, accurate intonation, and 11-49 strings.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a chunky ’59-style profile carve with ideal substance and full shoulders, yet shy of aping the “baseball bat” shapes of some of Gibson’s more ambitious ‘50s neck carves. The profile measures .865” deep at the 1st fret and .940” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl trapezoid inlay and medium jumbo frets which have good meat and crown, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4. The scale length is a full 24 3/4", and the nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The open book headstock shape, Kluson-style tuners, gold script text and pearloid logo inlay all echo a vintage Gibson aesthetic. There is faint cloudiness around the Tokai logo in the clear coat of the finish, and a few dings on the headstock edges.
All of the electronics work as intended, with the classic Les Paul/Love Rock control layout with individual Volume and Tone knobs governing each zebra bobbin Gotoh humbucker. The pickups each meter at 9.3k ohms. The wiring harness is stock save for one new USA-made CTS 500k pot. Hardware includes a Tune-o-Matic bridge and corresponding stopbar which show light patina on the nickel plating. Plastics comprise a quartet of deeply ambered bonnet knobs along with cream pickup rings and switch surround, and an amber switch tip.
The two-piece carved flame maple top is highlighted by the satin Ice Tea Sunburst finish, and cosmetic wear includes a few shallow marks on the lower bout on top, light finish scratches across the back, and some dings and finish chips on the body perimeter, largely clustered near the rear strap button. The finish on the profile is clean and smooth, buffed to a semi-gloss from contact with the palm.
A gigbag is included.
