Up for sale, a 2002 Fender Stratocaster '54 vintage reissue model ST54-80AM in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. A rare "Crafted in Japan" reissue of the Stratocaster's first year of production, this guitar was made in the Dyna Gakki factory, known for its quality craftsmanship and adherence to vintage specifications. A rare, high-tiered reissue, this guitar features a solid ash body, deep V neck profile carve, and a trio of factory-installed Fender Custom Shop black bobbin Custom '54 single coils.
The traditional tonewood pairing of an ash body and maple neck delivers great sonic authority, treble articulation, and complex midrange heft, qualities which translate faithfully through the Custom Shop pickups. Originally sold as the American '50s pickups and later rebranded as Custom '54s, these black bobbin pickups feature staggered, lightly beveled alnico magnets, delivering a broad array of traditional Strat tones. Each pickup has a distinctive, vital sound, with great percussive clarity and woody snap. This Strat weighs 8lbs, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The one-piece maple neck has a deep V profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .915” deep at the 1st fret and 1,005” at the 12th. The maple fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4" radius, and the original slender frets retain their full factory height with well-rounded crowns, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-5. The neck is straight, the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted, and notes ring out clearly in every register. The bone nut measures 42.5mm in width (just shy of 1 11/16"), and the headstock has features which reflect the '54 model year, including the round string tree, spaghetti logo, and Kluson-style tuning machines. The "Crafted in Japan" text and P-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
On the body, all of the electronics function as intended, with untouched solder joints and Custom Shop foil stickers on the black bobbins. The vibrato works smoothly with a full-size block that adds to the resonance and sustain of the instrument. Plastics include uniformly aged knobs and switch tip, with bright white pickup covers and a one-ply pickguard which exhibits some light pick marks on the treble side. The bridge and jack cup have bright chrome plating, and the Fender-stamped saddles show light surface patina.
The two-tone Sunburst gloss finish highlights the prominent grain of the ash body and cosmetic wear is limited to some scuffing on the back lower bout body edge, and just a few additional light finish scratches on the body as a whole.
A form-fit faux leather gigbag is included.
