Up for sale, a 2002 Fender Mustang Bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Crafted in Japan, this Mustang is a faithful and discontinued reissue of the classic short scale Fender model, with a factory installed split coil Seymour Duncan pickup. Finished in a particularly bright and "atomic" shade of Fiesta Red, this iteration of the Mustang Bass was made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market and is rarely seen outside its country of origin. There's a certain pluck and punch unique to this bass that's particularly appealing and sits well in a mix, with a thump that fills out the low end nicely while being a bit more focused than a Precision Bass. More aggressive and midrange forward than a P, this Mustang Bass is strung with roundwound 45-105 strings, delivering an articulate top end and a touch of growl. The instrument is also particularly lightweight at only 7lbs 14oz. We've had this Mustang Bass dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with optimal action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck features a slender C profile carve with rounded shoulders, lightly rolled fretboard edges, and a hair more heft and substance as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .805” deep at the 1st fret and .995” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard retains the original slender frets which show only light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, extending more faintly beneath the A and D strings until fret 6, playing cleanly in every register. The scale length is 30", while the fretboard radius matches vintage spec at 7 1/4" and the nut width measures 1 1/2". On the headstock, the clover button tuning gears turn very smoothly with clean chrome plating, and the block "Mustang Bass" logo is present on the headstock face. The "Crafted in Japan" text and P-prefix serial number are present just above the four-bolt neck plate.
The simple and straightforward electronics work as they should, with Master Volume and Tone controls to govern the split coil Seymour Duncan pickup. The chrome bridge and control plate have plenty of shine, and the white pearloid pickguard contrasts nicely with the custom color Fiesta Red gloss finish. Cosmetic wear includes a few dings across the back, some tiny nicks on the body parameter and lower bout on top, and a bit of the usual finish checking at the edges of the neck pocket. There is also a spot of faint buckle rash at the bass-side waist on the back. The ambered neck profile gloss finish is smooth and clean.
A gigbag is included.
