Up for sale, a 2002 Alembic custom one-off bass featuring the Europa body shape, Series II electronics, and a burled cocobolo top. Stunningly well-kept since new, this utterly unique Alembic boasts their traditional maple and purple heart five-ply neck through construction with mahogany body wings, capped with a deeply figured piece of carved cocobolo, and a slab ebony fingerboard. At 11lbs 5oz and sporting brass hardware throughout, there's no shortage of sustain and richness, and the bass is strung with fresh 45-105 strings. The Series II active electronics yield a hyper articulate, defined, and round response. The bass is absolutely exquisite in the depth and breadth of available sounds, all with a refinement and presence that’s pure Alembic. We've had this instrument dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with low action and accurate intonation.
The neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with a gentle increase in overall heft and shoulder as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .785" deep at the 1st fret and .940" at the 12th. The slab ebony fingerboard is inlaid with abalone oval position markers and boasts red LED side dots. The frets are nigh flawless, playing easily up the 34" scale. The polished brass nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the headstock features five-ply veneers on the front and back comprising layers of maple and purple heart with top veneers of cocobolo, matching the body.
The electronics function flawlessly, with both a mono 1/4" output and five-pin stereo output, and the back of the instrument has four trim pots peeking through the control cavity cover. The outer two trim pots adjust the gain of the individual pickups, and the inner two adjust the hum balance on the single coils. The plastic parts are near mint, and the brass hardware is practically perfect in its presentation.
The Europa body shape is extremely elegant and ergonomic, with rounded body contours and curves, featuring a heeless carve and particularly deep cutaway on the treble side for unparalleled access to the highest frets. The heavy burled figuring on the cocobolo top is accented by a bursted finish that’s a deep brownish black central to the body and lighter in its shading at the body edges, highlighting the dimensional figuring. The bass is like-new save for one small finish scratch just north of the bridge on the bass-side lower bout of the body.
The original hardshell case is included.
