Up for sale, a 2001 Gibson Custom Shop Historic 1957 Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty" in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. 100% original save for a few components in the wiring harness and a new nut, this Les Paul was officially known as the "LPB7" model. A very elegant and vintage-correct Custom Shop Les Paul with a mahogany carved top as well as a solid, non-weight relieved mahogany body, this Black Beauty weighs 9lbs 12oz delivering a lively, powerful acoustic voice that translates well through the humbuckers.
The pair of '57 Classic PAF humbuckers deliver a range of tones from snarling, harmonic rich power in the bridge position, to more mellow and wooly tones at the neck. The tone stays defined and warm in all positions, and the mahogany top adds to the uniqueness of the sonic range on tap, balanced by the glassy immediacy of the ebony fingerboard. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Les Paul is strung with 10-46 strings and dialed in with slinky action and spot-on intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a full "baseball bat" C-shaped profile carve, highly accurate for 1957 with generous shoulders, measuring .905" deep at the 1st fret and 1.015" at the 12th. The bound ebony fretboard sports pearl block inlay and medium jumbo fretwire which has plenty of meat and well-rounded crowns, showing only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The guitar conforms to traditional Gibson spec with a 24 3/4" scale length and 1 11/16" nut width, and the neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The headstock has all of the hallmarks of a Custom, with the split diamond pearl inlay, inlaid Gibson logo, and multi-ply binding. The tuners are the original gold Grover Rotomatic gears, and the headstock features an inked serial number.
Electronics comprise the stock pair of '57 Classic humbuckers that both have perfect PAF decals on their baseplates. The harness features two modern CTS 500K Volume pots and premium Sprague Orange Drop tone caps, along with the original pair of Gibson-embossed Tone pots. Hardware comprises an ABR-1 bridge and stopbar, with some patina through the gold plating, particularly on the pickup edges and stopbar. Plastics include black bonnet knobs, a multi-ply pickguard, and amber switch tip.
The gloss Ebony finish exhibits prominent finish scuffing on the lower bout on top, likely from contact with wrist jewelry. There is light buckle wear across the back, and some additional minor marks and finish scratches from use on the body as a whole. The neck profile has a smooth, clean gloss finish, with just one spot of finish chipping central to the carve behind fret 11, worn smooth through play.
The original Gibson Custom Shop hardshell case is included.
