Up for sale, a 1998 Fender Precision Bass '70 vintage reissue model PB70-78US with a custom color Capri Orange finish. This upscale and long ago discontinued model was crafted by Dyna Gakki in Japan and is rarely seen outside its country of origin. Boasting premium fit and finish work, the Crafted in Japan instruments offered stiff competition for Fender's American VIntage line, in large part why they weren't imported to the USA.
At its heart, this Precision Bass features a factory-installed Fender USA American Standard split coil P Bass pickup. Other select vintage touches include a block logo on the headstock, properly positioned thumb rest, and a thick slab rosewood fretboard (an impactful feature that arguably elevates this model over some actual vintage examples with thinner veneer boards). Tonally, this bass delivers the goods, and acoustically the alder body is quite resonant. There's a strong fundamental thump to the tone, and the roundwound strings provide plenty of top end articulation. The bass weighs 8lbs 12oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in with 45-105 roundwound strings, optimal action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C profile carve with just enough roundness in the shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .820" deep at the 1st fret and .945" at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a 7 1/4" radius, and the original medium jumbo frets have their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing just a hint of wear on the crowns of frets 1-4. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and on the headstock the tuners have the correct vintage footprint with large chrome clover-shaped keys that show only light surface patina. The "Crafted in Japan" text and O-prefix serial are present just above the four-bolt neck plate.
All of the electronics work as they should, with the American Standard pickup wired to the stock Fender Japan wiring harness. Hardware includes clean chrome plated knobs and bridge, with light patina across the saddles. The parchment pickguard is fitted with a thumb rest, contrasting nicely with the custom color Capri Orange gloss finish. Cosmetic wear includes some minor dings on the back, primarily on the lower bout, with a finish chip on the treble-side lower bout edge. Wear on the top is more restrained, and the neck profile has a smooth ambered gloss finish.
The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
