Up for sale, a 2000 Fender Precision Bass ‘70 vintage reissue model PB70-70US in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag. This uncommon, upper-tiered Fender Japan bass has been upgraded with a Fender Pure Vintage ‘58 split coil pickup, and sports select vintage-accurate touches including a block logo on the headstock, proper thumb rest placement, and a black pickguard. One welcome deviation from vintage spec is the thick slab rosewood fretboard (as opposed to the thinner veneer board seen on genuine vintage examples).

An alder body and maple neck round out the tonewood complement, and at 9lbs 1oz this bass dished out plenty of natural sonic authority and resonance. The Fender USA-made Pure Vintage ‘58 split coil pickup delivers the P Bass goods, with black bobbin flatwork, cloth-covered leads, alnico magnet construction, and vintage-accurate raised A string poles for better string balance. The tone is full and round, with ample pillowy thump and top end sweetness. This Precision Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges and modest shoulders at the nut, gaining appreciably more heft and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .825” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius and flawless stock medium jumbo fretwire. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the original bone nut measures 1 5/8“ in width. The headstock sports a block logo, and the clover-button tuners have vintage-spec full-size baseplates, turning smoothly and holding pitch as they should with an even dusting of surface patina on their nickel plating. The “Crafted in Japan” text and O-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.

All of the electronics work as they should, with the upgraded USA-made Pure Vintage ‘58 pickup wired to the stock Fender Japan wiring harness, governed by Master Volume and Tone controls. Hardware includes clean chrome-plated knurled knobs and bridge, with just a hint of patina across the steel barrel saddles. The thumb rest and the three-ply black pickguard round out the plastics.

This is a well-kept example, and the Olympic White gloss finish exhibits uniform yellowing of the clear coat, with a handful of minor dings and marks on the lower bout on the back and body perimeter. The smooth ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless.

The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
