Up for sale, a 1999 Tokai SG60 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This Tokai was produced in Japan (not to be confused with Chinese-made models), and the SG60 clearly takes its cues from the early '60s Gibson SG Standard with solid mahogany construction, a small batwing pickguard, nickel-plated hardware, "open book" headstock shape, Kluson-style tuners, and pearloid trapezoid inlays.
The pair of original Gotoh-branded humbuckers have a modern tonal profile geared for powerful cleans and high gain applications. Both pickups meter at 11k+ ohms, with muscle and growl in the bridge position and thick, focused chunk at the neck. Featherweight at 6lbs 6oz, this SG60 benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped carve with round shoulders, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearloid trapezoid inlay, and the medium jumbo fretwire shows virtually no wear, playing cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16” in width. On the “open book” headstock, the Kluson-style tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with lightly greened keystone buttons. The serial on the back of the peghead dates to ‘99.
All of the electronics function as intended, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each humbucker plus a three-way pickup selector switch, and the stock harness is untouched, with full-size 500k Japanese pots. Nickel-plated hardware includes the pickup covers, ABR-1-style bridge and stopbar, and plastics comprise the quartet of reflector knobs and the small three-ply black pickguard. The pickguard is a modern replacement furnished by Pickguardian.
Cosmetic wear on the gloss Cherry Red finish is limited to some minor dings on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back and lower bout perimeter, and one small finish chip on the outside edge of the treble-side cutaway. The smooth gloss finish on the neck profile is immaculate.
A gigbag is included.
