Up for sale, a 1999 Lovetone Cheese Source in mint condition, complete with the original box and paperwork. Handbuilt in England, this is one of the very first 100 Cheese Sources ever made, with a very low serial number and the distinctive darker and more reddish silkscreen graphics seen on the very first run. Lovetone has gained an epic word-of-mouth cult status amongst gear aficionados since their introduction in 1995, and the list of artists and producers who have used Lovetone pedals is extensive, including Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Oasis, Sonic Youth, and Stereolab to name a few. No longer in production, the Cheese Source is a combination of two Lovetone classics, the Brown Source and Big Cheese. They appear with the same true bypass circuitry as before, with the addition of status LEDs.
The Cheese is a loving homage to the buzzy, harmonically rich early fuzz effects of yesteryear. Its innovative and interactive controls can take the pedal from an almost gated break-up to a full-out saturated onslaught of shred proportions. Far from being just a guitar effect, the Cheese is eminently useful for any source yearning for thunderous fuzz and analog character. The Cheese works exceptionally well in the Effects Loop of the Meatball (the pedal which Lovetone released and sold as a companion to the Cheese Source) and can transform virtually any instrument into a super squelchy synth with no tracking worries, particularly so with an octave pedal immediately upstream for that classic double octave effect.
The Source is an instant flashback to the dynamic, singing “brown sound” associated with countless classic records. Unparalleled purity is offered up with an uncanny touch-sensitive valve-like grunt. An almost tangible sense of electricity is apparent, and will provide any new guitar or bass with an instant injection of vintage character, as the soft rounded distortion and inherent compression evoke plummy psychedelic sounds. In the studio this pedal can perform amazing transformations as well, and blended with the straight signal, can be used to add just a touch of dirt and girth to those unfashionable clean cut signals.
There are just a couple faint marks on the enclosure, the graphics are pristine, and the original knob set and large rubber grip pad on the bottom are present. In the easy-access battery compartment, the inspection sticker is dated 30/6/99.
The original box is included, along with the paperwork/manual.
