Up for sale, a 1999 Gibson J-45 Rosewood in near-mint condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, hangtags and case candy. A decidedly unique iteration of Gibson’s ever-popular workhorse dreadnought, this J-45 features (as the name suggests) solid rosewood back and sides. This is a first-year example of the original J-45 Rosewood variant, produced from 1999-2001, featuring ornate marquetry including an abalone rosette, ivoroid binding, and mother of pearl “floret” fretboard inlays.
This J-45 Rosewood was ordered by Gibson’s Japanese distributor Yamano; Gibson’s USA-made guitars distributed via Yamano are often considered to be among their absolute best, featuring the highest quality woods picked for Gibson’s discerning Japanese audience. Other features include gold Grover Rotomatic tuning machines, a piezo transducer undersaddle pickup, and a gloss Antique Natural nitro lacquer finish on top.
The slope shoulder J-45 design ensures great natural warmth and projection, boasting an X-braced Sitka spruce top and an ebony fingerboard on the one-piece mahogany neck. The treble response is particularly detailed and immediate, with a sparkling glassy cut, while the rosewood back/sides ensures a bolder, deeper bass register kick and an overarching clarity. It’s also equally rewarding both as a flatpicker and as a fingerstyle instrument. Weighing 5lbs 2oz, this J-45 Rosewood has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action.
