Up for sale, a 1999 Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. The flagship of the Music Man line, this 1990s iteration of the StingRay is largely the same as it was upon its introduction in the late '70s, featuring roadworthy construction, a massive hardened steel bridge, elegant oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning key configuration, and the ever popular Music Man humbucker. Governed by an active 3-band EQ, the alnico magnet humbucker offers punchy growl and thick, round thump. The tonewood combination of a solid ash body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard provides ample warmth and articulation, delivering an authoritative acoustic tone with a gutsy note attack. The bass weighs 9lbs 5oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped carve with moderate shoulder, lightly rolled edges, and a silky smooth gun oil finish on the profile, measures .810" deep at the 1st fret and .930" at the 12th. And with its six-bolt attachment, this neck delivers stability that easily surpasses most set necks. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a 11" radius, and medium jumbo fretwire has plenty of meat and crown. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock retains the original Music Man-branded tuning machines which have light surface patina on the clover buttons. The neck pocket retains its original pencil date from '99.
All of the electronics work as intended, with a Master Volume knob in addition to the 3-band active EQ circuit. The active circuitry is untouched, with original CTS pots which date to the 37th week of '98. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine, with just a touch of pitting on the control plate and domed knurled knobs. The Sunburst gloss exhibits some small finish chips and dings on the bass side of the top, with similar wear on the lower bout on the back. There are just a few additional faint finish scratches and tiny nicks on the body as a whole.
A gigbag is included.
