Up for sale, a 1998 Gibson Les Paul Standard in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A limited run model presumably produced at the bequest of Gibson's Japanese distributor Yamano (this guitar was sourced from Tokyo), this Standard is visually unique, splitting the difference between a Custom and a Standard with all gold hardware and an Ebony gloss nitro lacquer finish.
Weighing 10lbs 2oz and hailing from what is increasingly known as Gibson's "good wood era," this Standard offers rich sustain and an authoritative natural acoustic voice that translates well through the humbuckers. Traditional tonewoods include a carved maple top, mahogany body, and one-piece mahogany neck. The 490R and 498T humbuckers have a wide tonal palette, with the Alnico II magnets in the neck pickup offering more chime and warmth, while the Alnico V bridge pickup has a cut and snarl that cuts through with classic Gibson roar. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Les Paul Standard has low action, spot-on intonation, and fresh 10-46 strings.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a slender ‘60s-style C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with a gentle increase in overall roundness and shoulder further up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. On the bound rosewood fretboard, the original slender frets have plenty of meat and perfectly rounded crowns, showing zero wear. The guitar plays cleanly in all registers, the neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimally adjusted. The nut has Gibson's full 1 11/16" width. The headstock retains the "Standard" truss rod cover and Grover Rotomatic tuning machines with metal tulip buttons.
All of the electronics work as they should, with stock pickups, clean "Gibson USA" stamps on the baseplates, and untouched solder on the gold covers. The wiring harness is untouched as well, with original solder joints and Gibson-embossed Alpha pots. The gold hardware has plenty of shine and only very light surface patina, particularly on the tailpiece studs and tulip tuner buttons. All of the original plastic parts are present including the gold speed knobs, black pickup rings, and black Custom-style multi-ply pickguard which shows light pickwear.
The nitro lacquer Ebony gloss finish has one small ding central to the lower bout on the back and one smaller finish chip adjacent to the knobs on top, with minor buckle worming on the lower bout on the back and a few small dings and light scuffs in this area as well. The top presents extremely well, and the gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
The original brown Gibson USA hardshell case is included.
