Up for sale, a 1998 Fender Jazzmaster '62 reissue model JM66-85 TOM in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. A rare iteration of the '62 Jazzmaster platform, this "Crafted in Japan" Jazzmaster model features a factory-installed Tune-o-Matic bridge (TOM model suffix) for increased stability. Rarely seen outside its country of origin and designed to be sold only within Japan, this Jazzmaster offers a broad range of vintage-flavored tonalities with a gloss Surf Green finish over an alder body.
Via the stock pickup pair, this Jazzmaster has plenty of twang and sparkle on tap, with a range of defined and powerful tones from the two single coil pickups, and warm, wooly sounds when switched to the Rhythm Circuit on the guitar's lower body horn. Weighing 7lbs 15oz, we've had this Jazzmaster professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar where we specialize in Fender Offset instruments, dialed in with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The amber-tinted maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .900” at the 12th. The thick rosewood fretboard has dot inlay and original slender vintage-style frets that have their full factory height, showing moderate wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5, with wear growing fainter and extending to fret 9. The scale length is a full 25 1/2", the fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4" radius, and the nut measures 42mm in width (1.650"). The headstock sports a Pre-CBS style "Spaghetti" Jazzmaster logo, with Kluson-style tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The "Crafted in Japan" script text and O-prefix serial number are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
All of the electronics work as they should, and hardware includes the original Tune-o-Matic bridge and vibrato unit which engages smoothly for quick warbles and surfy dives, showing light surface patina on the chrome plating. Plastic parts comprise a white pickguard and uniformly yellowed pickup covers and knobs. Cosmetic wear on the Surf Green gloss finish includes a few clustered dings of note and finish chips on the treble-side lower bout body edge, a small area of faint buckle rash on the belly contour, and only a few additional minor dings and faint finish scratches on the body as a whole The neck has a nigh flawless ambered gloss finish.
The original Fender-branded padded gigbag is included.
