Up for sale, a 1998 Fender Jazz Bass model JBG-70 in near-mint condition and in perfect working order. This uncommon, upper-tiered Fender Japan Jazz Bass had a limited production run in the ‘90s and sports an eye-catching Matte Brown (catalog: MBR) finish, a satin application with a decidedly red hue, accented by all-gold hardware.
Tonewoods include a sen ash body and a maple neck capped by a slab rosewood fretboard. This bass has a clear, punchy acoustic voice, and the tonewood complement results in a harmonically complex midrange, faithfully translated by the stock single coil pickups. The bridge pickup delivers plenty of cut and burp, with a smooth treble grind and more warmth and thickness via the neck pickup, and rolling the Tone knob rolled back to taste yields more width and thump. Weighing 9lbs 6oz, this Jazz Bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender U-shaped profile carve at the nut with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, gaining appreciably more heft and roundness in the higher registers of the fretboard, measuring .810” deep at the 1st fret and .990” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard is a notably dark cut with a 12” radius, and the stock slender fretwire is in great shape, only exhibiting a hint of wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-5. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The matching headstock sports a gold logo, and the clover-button tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with bright gold plating. The O-prefix serial is present above the four-bolt gold neck plate.
All of the electronics function as intended, and the harness has been upgraded with a set of modern CTS 250k mini pots. The gold hardware has plenty of shine, including the control plate, bridge base, saddles, and even the screws. Plastics comprise the trio of knobs and three-ply black pickguard. The Matte Brown satin finish is extremely clean, with just a scant few microscopic nicks on the body as a whole. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile is flawless.
A Guardian-brand padded gigbag is included.
