1998 Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H Electric Bass Guitar Natural, USA

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1998 Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order with a Natural gloss finish on the ash body. The flagship of the Music Man line, this 1990s iteration of the StingRay is largely the same as it was upon its introduction in the late '70s, featuring roadworthy construction, a massive hardened steel bridge, elegant oval pickguard, 3+1 tuning key configuration, and the ever popular Music Man humbucker. Governed by an active 3-band EQ, the alnico humbucker offers punchy growl and thick, round thump. The tonewood combination of a solid ash body and rosewood fretboard provides ample warmth and articulation, with the note attack and midrange detail inherent in ash. The bass weighs 9lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a modestly slender C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders and a silky smooth gun oil finish, measures .820" deep at the 1st fret and .935" at the 12th. And with its six-bolt attachment, this neck delivers stability that easily surpasses most set necks. The maple fretboard has a 11" radius and medium jumbo fretwire has plenty of meat and crown, showing just a touch of wear beneath the A and D strings on frets 1-4. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the headstock retains the original chrome tuning machines which have surface patina on the clover buttons. The neck pocket retains its original pencil date from 4-9-98.

All of the electronics work as intended, with a Master Volume knob in addition to the 3-band active EQ circuit. The active circuitry is untouched, with original CTS pots which date to the 8th week of '98. The chrome hardware has plenty of shine, with a clean control plate, knurled knobs, neck plate, and vintage-spec bridge with individual string mutes. The Natural gloss is very clean overall, showing just a few minor marks and light finish scratches. There is also pick scuffing across the guard and a spot of additional light wear in the plastic just forward of the humbucker. The smooth gun oil finish on the profile has been further worn by contact with the palm down to the bare maple along the majority of the profile, exhibiting just a couple tiny marks on the bass-side shoulder behind fret 5.

A gigbag is included.
