Up for sale, a 1998 Ernie Ball Music Man Axis in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. An early example of the Axis produced in the years subsequent to the sunsetting of Music Man's endorsement deal with Eddie Van Halen, the Axis retains all of the essential features of its predecessor, with the one notable difference of the pickup selector relocated closer to the singular Volume knob. And just like the Music Mans that Eddie favored, this Axis is finished in Transparent Gold, highlighting the deep, dimensional quilt figuring across the bookmatched maple top.

A basswood body and heavily figured flame maple neck round out the tonewoods, providing a articulate, balanced platform for the pair of custom DiMarzio humbuckers which were wound specifically for the Axis and not offered elsewhere. These pickups are mounted directly for the body for optimal resonance, dishing out plenty of articulate cut and sweet sustain, with more growl and attitude from the bridge pickup and a nice thick, round sounding neck pickup. This Axis weighs 7lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, slinky action, and spot-on intonation.

The roasted flame maple neck has an asymmetrical profile carve with lightly rolled fretboard edges, slightly rounder on the bass side and more slender on the treble side, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The fretboard has a 10” radius, and the stock medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect, with well-rounded crowns and plenty of meat, ostensibly benefitting from a level and crown in the guitar's lifetime, given the finger wear on the fretboard. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The locking nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the headstock has a flame maple veneer, Schaller M6LA tuning machines with pearloid buttons

On the body, the electronics are all original, and hardware includes the Music Man-branded Floyd Rose Licensed tremolo which has gleaming chrome plating. The gloss Transparent Gold finish is a subtle application, highlighting the figuring in the quilted maple top and presenting very well, with just two tiny dings on the lower bout. Cosmetic wear is otherwise limited to a handful of minor dings along the lower bout perimeter, and some finish checking and a few scratches on the lower bout on the back. The neck profile is flawless, finished with gunstock oil and a hand-rubbed special wax blend.

A padded faux leather gigbag is included.
