Up for sale, a 1997 Gibson 1961 Les Paul SG Custom in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. An early Gibson Custom Shop Historic offering, this SG Custom has a traditional tonewood complement with mahogany body and neck construction as well as a genuine slab ebony fingerboard. This guitar sports trio of '57 Classic PAF humbuckers that deliver the fullness, midrange cut, and detailed, harmonic-rich tones which have made the SG a favorite for decades. This SG Custom is from Gibson's flagship Historic line of vintage reissue models, and the Custom Shop delivers top notch quality and expert craftsmanship. Â
Retaining the Les Paul moniker of the very first years of the SG body shape, this Custom model sports a gloss Polaris White nitro lacquer finish that shows uniform yellowing and prominent natural lacquer checking from the past 25 years (no artificial relic'ing here). Weighing 8lbs 1oz, this SG is very acoustically resonant and well-balanced on a strap, with a dynamic and responsive quality. Each pickup selection on the three-way toggle has a unique voice, and everything from throaty neck pickup warmth to aggressive chime and bark in the bridge position can be attained at the flip of a switch. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 10-46 strings, this SG Custom is dialed in with low action and spot-on intonation.
The neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with round shoulders and just a hair more heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .815" deep at the 1st fret and .915" at the 12th. The bound slab ebony fretboard has pearl block inlay and original medium jumbo frets that are practically perfect with their full factory height and well-rounded crowns. The guitar plays easily up the 24 3/4" scale length with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock sports a set of gold Gibson Deluxe tuning machines with lightly greened tulip buttons, and the tuners turn very smoothly. The stamped six digit serial number dates to '97.
On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, and the factory wiring harness is untouched with original braided Gibson wire, ceramic disc tone caps, and CTS pots that date to the 21st week of '95. There is light uniform surface patina on the ABR-1 bridge, stopbar, and trio of pickup covers, and plastics comprise the "Les Paul Custom" truss rod cover and neck tenon spacer, multi-ply pickguard, and quartet of black reflector cap knobs. The yellowing of the Polaris White nitro lacquer gloss finish is very consistent, with a bit of deeper ambering along the neck profile given contact with the palm. Beyond the prominent lacquer checking, the guitar is stunningly well-kept, with cosmetic wear limited to just a few small dings on the body as a whole, while the gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean.
A brown tolex Gibson USA hardshell case with pink plush interior is included.
