Up for sale, a 1997 Fender Precision Bass ‘70 vintage reissue model PB70-70US in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This uncommon “Made in Japan” offering features a factory-installed Fender American Standard split coil P Bass pickup, along with a few select vintage touches including a block logo on the headstock, proper thumb rest placement, and black pickguard. One welcome deviation from vintage spec is a thick slab rosewood fretboard (as opposed to a thinner veneer board seen on actual vintage examples). With an alder body as its sonic foundation, this bass delivers the goods with strong inherent thump and top end sweetness and articulation. Weighing 9lbs 1oz, this bass has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation. The maple neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve at the nut with just enough roundness in the shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .790” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard is an extremely dark, tight-grained cut of this tonewood with a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius and practically perfect medium jumbo fretwire. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1 5/8“ in width. The headstock features a block logo, and the clover-button tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with full-size baseplates and a light dusting of patina. The “Made in Japan” text and N-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate. All of the electronics work as they should, with the Fender American Standard pickup wired to the stock Fender Japan wiring harness. Hardware includes the clean chrome-plated knurled knobs and bridge, and plastics comprise the thumb rest and the three-ply black pickguard. The gloss Olympic White finish (catalog: Vintage White) skews more cream/yellow in its presentation than later iterations of this model, and cosmetic wear includes light buckle worming central to the back, a few scattered dings on the body as a whole, and an extra strap button hole on the treble side body horn. The smooth ambered gloss on the neck profile is nigh-flawless, highlighting light figuring in the maple. The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
