Up for sale, a 1997 Fender American Precision Bass Deluxe in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original molded hardshell case. Stunningly clean with the original plastic knob overlay labeling the functions of the controls, this short-lived and uncommon upper-tiered Fender bass is one of their most versatile ever. Features include a Precision-style split coil pickup in tandem with a high-powered bridge position humbucker and an active three-band EQ, enabling a degree of tonal sculpting afforded by sparingly few Fender basses.
Tonewoods include an alder body and a graphite-reinforced maple neck capped by a thick slab rosewood fretboard. The body is slightly smaller than a standard P Bass for comfort and playability, but at 9lbs 8oz this Precision Deluxe still dishes out ample natural sustain and sonic authority, faithfully captured by the stock pair of pickups. The split-coil pickup in the neck position delivers the inherent thump and sweet treble growl enjoyed by Precision aficionados for decades, while the high-powered humbucker at the bridge delivers punch and power. Many of the best sounds can be found by mixing the two pickups, using the center-detent Dynamic Select (Blend) knob, and dialed in with the active three-band EQ. This Precision Deluxe has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with round and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .860” deep at the 1st fret and .970” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a modern 9 1/2“ radius, and the medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect, playing cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight, graphite-reinforced neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures an easily-navigable 1 5/8“ in width. On the headstock, the F-embossed tuning machines offer modern performance, turning smoothly and holding pitch reliably.
All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickup pair wired to the stock harness and governed by Master Volume, Dynamic Select (Blend), Treble Boost/Cut, Bass Boost/Cut, and Mid Boost/Cut controls. The Treble and Bass EQ knobs are stacked, and all of the flat-topped knurled knobs shine like new. The bridge base and threaded saddles are also notably clean, and the four-ply white pearloid pickguard still retains the factory protective film. On the back of the body, the cavity cover for the 9V battery powering the active EQ also retains its factory film, and the plastic insert which labels the functionality of each knob is also still present.
This is a remarkably well-kept bass, with cosmetic wear on the gloss custom color Inca Silver finish limited to just a few faint scratches in the clear coat on the back of the body. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile is pristine.
The original Fender-branded molded hardshell case is included.
