Up for sale, a 1996 Gibson Les Paul Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order with a TV Yellow gloss nitro lacquer finish. Retaining its original hardshell case and factory paperwork, this Les Paul was originally distributed in Japan by Gibson USA's distributor, Yamano. Already hailing from Gibson's "good wood era," the Yamano instruments are often considered among Gibson's best, featuring the highest quality woods hand-picked for Gibson's discerning Japanese audience.
Offering the same tonal platform as a '50s Special, this Gibson features an ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic bridge for more accurate intonation and a pair of P-100 pickups. These pickups offer plenty of classic P-90 growl, presence, and midrange power, channeling the natural warmth of the mahogany body and neck, and the second coil ensures hum-free performance. The guitar weighs 7lbs 15oz, benefitting from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.
The one-piece mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut with round shoulders in every register, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .890" at the 12th. On the bound rosewood fretboard, the original medium jumbo frets have plenty of meat and well-rounded crowns, showing only faint wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width, and the scale length is 24 3/4". The face of the headstock features Gibson pearl inlay, Les Paul Special gold silkscreen text, and original mini Grover Rotomatic tuning machines.
All of the electronics work as they should, and the P-100 pickups are wired to a harness with three original Gibson-branded Alpha pots and one recent CTS-made replacement. The control cavity has also been shielded to ensure a low noise floor. The guitar features a traditional Les Paul control array with individual Volume and Tone knobs for each pickup. Hardware includes the ABR-1 bridge and stopbar tailpiece, and the stock plastics include a quartet of black bonnet knobs and a multi-ply pickguard that shows pick scuffing extending modestly beyond the guard's edge.
The gloss nitro lacquer TV Yellow finish exhibits some minor dings and scuffs along the lower bout body edge, light buckle wear central to the lower bout, and a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with one ding on the bass-side shoulder behind fret 6. While this mark can be felt, it’s quite shallow and not distracting to the palm while fretting.
The original Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case with pink plush interior is included, along with the Gibson/Yamano factory paperwork.
