Up for sale, a 1996 Fender Jag-Stang model JSG-65 in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This unique Fender Japan offering was produced during the first year of the Jag-Stang’s original (less than two years) “Made in Japan” production run.
Famously known for being designed by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana when he took two polaroids of a Mustang and Jaguar and cut them together, the Jag-Stang is in step with the features of both of these classic short scale Fender models, while also satisfying the higher gain pickup needs of Nirvana's chief architect. The guitar weighs 7lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, slinky action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, modeled after one of Cobain's favorite '60s Mustangs. The profile measures .820” deep at the 1st fret and .910” at the 12th. The thick rosewood fretboard features a vintage-spec 7 1/4" radius, and the original slender fretwire exhibits moderate wear beneath the strings on the crowns of frets 1-2, with wear growing progressively lighter beneath the plain strings and extending to fret 9. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24” scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 1 9/16" in width. On the headstock, the original Kluson-style tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The “Designed by Kurt Cobain” decal is present on the back of the headstock, and the “Made in Japan” text and U-prefix serial are present above the four-bolt neck plate.
The electronics work as they should, with the original Dragster humbucker and ST-Vintage single coil pickup wired to the stock harness, and the pickups are governed by on/off/on pickup selector switches and a pair of Master Volume and Tone knobs. The chrome hardware is bright and clean, including the control plate and the vibrato unit; which has a very smooth response, complete with the original arm. Plastics include the original pair of knobs and the dimensional white pearloid pickguard.
This guitar is quite clean, with cosmetic wear on the gloss Fiesta Red finish limited to a handful of minor dings on the lower bout (both top and back) and along the body perimeter. The neck profile retains its smooth ambered gloss.
The original Fender-branded gigbag is included.
