Up for sale, a 1995 Peavey 5150 head and matching 4x12 speaker cabinet in excellent condition and in perfect working order, freshly serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar. Easily among the most important high-gain amplifiers ever produced, the 5150 was released in 1992 as a collaboration between Eddie Van Halen and Peavey engineer James Brown, essentially becoming the industry standard for the tight, saturated tones of modern metal guitar. Endlessly replicated and simulated, the 5150 utilizes cascading gain stages to create its signature thick harmonic saturation, offering absolutely bone crushing amounts of distortion without any muddiness at all thanks to the cold bias circuit and patented Power Amp Resonance control. That tight-yet-huge response also makes the 5150 particularly well-suited to drop tunings and seven or eight-string guitars, and the 5150 is also famous for its scooped sound, with the midrange carefully reigned in, an iconic tone championed extensively by modern metal pioneers including Andy Sneap, Joe Satriani, and Buckethead.

Featuring a dual-channel, dual-input design and footswitchable between the Rhythm and Lead channels, the 5150 delivers 120 watts of RMS all-tube power via the quartet of 6L6 power tubes, with five 12AX7 valves in the preamp. The Rhythm channel features Bright and Crunch switches, and both channels boast Pre & Post gain controls, with a three-band EQ for tonal sculpting functionality. At the power amp, the patented Resonance control enables the bottom end to be tailored with a deal of precision afforded by virtually no other circuits at the time of the 5150’s release, and the Presence control shapes the treble response. The circuit on the 5150 is largely untouched, with a carefully matched quartet of 6L6s (two Mesa-branded, two Ruby-branded), and the original Electrical Windings, Inc. transformers date to the 46th week of ‘95.

The 4x12 speaker cabinet is loaded with the original quad of 12” Sheffield 1200 special-voiced ceramic magnet speakers with clean frames and original cones, wired for a 16 ohm load.

This is a well-kept Peavey, with sparingly little wear on the black tolex on the head beyond a few minor scuffs on top. There’s surface patina on the amp corners and light chipping on the edges of the top vent, while the graphics on the faceplate are very clean with a complete set of original chickenhead knobs. The cabinet shows only very light wear on the enclosure edges, complete with original casters.
