Up for sale, a 1995 Orville by Gibson Byrdland in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This extremely rare, non-catalog Byrdland was offered in the "Orville by Gibson" line, made exclusively for the Japanese market and seldom seen outside its country of origin. This Orville is an official Gibson-licensed guitar and a result of a partnership between Gibson USA and their Japanese distributor Yamano Gakki. Named after Gibson's founder, Orville Gibson, this discontinued Orville model was crafted at the Terada factory.
An extremely faithful iteration of one of Gibson's most storied golden age thinline hollowbody models, the Byrdland was a collaboration between two notable session guitarists, Billy Byrd and Hank Garland. This fearsome twosome collaborated with Gibson representative Clarence Havenga in the mid '50s to birth the Byrdland, a model replete with premium features while also boasting a shorter scale length to facilitate complex chord extensions and speedy lead runs.
The Byrdland has a 17” wide, thinline hollow body (2 3/8“ deep), solid arched spruce top, flame maple back and sides, a three-piece maple neck with walnut stringers, and a bound ebony fretboard. The acoustic tone is full-sounding and detailed, with a woody, percussive quality equally well-suited to pristine jazz chording and sizzling drive. The pair of modern Gibson ‘57 Classic PAF humbuckers deliver smooth treble cut and a touch of growl in the bridge position and a bold, round quality at the neck. This Byrdland weighs 7lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
