Up for sale, a 1994 Gibson LeGrand in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. First introduced in 1993, this is a particularly early example of the LeGrand, a model designed as a direct successor to Gibson’s Johnny Smith archtop. The LeGrand features the slender 3” deep body and X-braced soundboard of the Johnny Smith, paired with the long 25 1/2“ scale and full 1 11/16” nut width of the L-5.

This LeGrand is as visually distinct as it is premium, boasting the notably rare Dark Wineburst nitro lacquer finish accented by gold hardware and the original “confetti” pickguard, mimicking a material seen on select Super 400s. Tonewoods include a hand-carved, bookmatched quartersawn Sitka spruce soundboard with a 17” lower bout width, AAA tiger flame maple back and sides, three-piece flame maple neck, and bound ebony fingerboard, outfitted with the original BJB floating humbucker assembly.

Acoustically, this guitar is warm and articulate, balanced across all strings and registers. The 25 1/2“ scale length results in exquisite projection and bounce, with smooth, glassy trebles and rich midrange cut accentuated via the fresh set of 12-52 flatwound strings. The floating BJB humbucker, similar to the pedigree of the guitar itself, was a revised version of the Johnny Smith pickup; this humbucker is remarkably true to the warmth and tonal liveliness of the instrument, with dense harmonics and sweet bloom; broad, woody, and dynamic. Weighing 6lbs 8oz, this LeGrand has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The gloss Dark Wineburst nitro lacquer finish is framed by multi-ply binding and highlights the gorgeous figuring in the tiger flame maple, particularly dimensional and evenly-spaced on the back. This is a well-kept instrument, with just a few tiny dings on top at the lower bout and a couple faint finish scratches on the back and rims. The nitro gloss on the neck profile is flawless.

The original brown Gibson USA hardshell case is included, along with an optional ABR-1 bridge.
