Up for sale, a 1994 Gibson J-100 XTRA Limited Edition 100th Anniversary model jumbo acoustic in excellent condition and in perfect working order, augmented with a Fishman Acoustic Matrix pickup and complete with the original hangtags and a Gibson hardshell case. To celebrate the company's centennial, Gibson offered 12 unique vintage reissue models in 1994, with each model hand-crafted in a limited run of only 100 instruments. This J-100 XTRA captures the finer points of a Gibson Jumbo with a unique tonewood combination, featuring a solid X-braced Sitka spruce top with hand-scalloped and tuned bracing and solid mahogany back and sides, sporting a high gloss Antique Walnut (Natural top) nitro lacquer finish.

Few instruments can match the sheer projection of a Gibson Jumbo and its 17” lower bout, and this J-100 XTRA has a tone that’s notably broad and muscly, with an open, dynamic quality indicative of a soundboard that’s been worked-in over a number of decades. There’s ample kick and sweet bloom in the lower frequencies, with the lower-midrange growl and richness inherent in mahogany. The trebles are detailed and punchy, with plenty of sparkle too. This Gibson weighs 4lbs 14oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 phosphor bronze strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation.

The neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders, measuring .865” deep at the 1st fret and .925” at the 9th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has been refretted with pristine stock slender fretwire, playing cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. Action is set at 7/64” on the bass side and 5/64” on the treble side, measured at the 12th fret. The nut measures a full 1 3/4“ in width, perfect for comfortable chording. The headstock features the original set of nickel-plated Gibson Deluxe bolt-bushing tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch with greened keystone buttons. There is some minor (stable) delamination of the clear coat and a few small finish chips through the gloss adjacent to the tuner bushings on the headstock face.

On the body, the rosewood open moustache bridge sits flush with the top on all edges, and the compensated carved bone saddle has ample height. The tortoise pickguard has some requisite scuffing along the strum path. The added Fishman Acoustic Matrix pickup does an excellent job of faithfully capturing the natural acoustic tone of the guitar, adding to the versatility and performance-ready nature of this instrument. The “Gibson 100 Years 1894-1994” label is visible through the soundhole.

The gloss Antique Walnut (Natural) nitro lacquer finish exhibits broad lacquer checking on the lower bout on top. The center seam on the back has been reglued, with limited touchup just south of the neck heel. A singular and very slight repaired split extends beneath the pickguard on the upper bout. Cosmetic wear is limited to some small nicks and faint finish scratches on the body as a whole. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with a small finish chip on the treble-side shoulder behind fret 3 that doesn’t impede the palm while playing. A strap button has also been added to the treble side of the neck heel.

A Gibson-branded hardshell case is included, along with all the factory hangtags and documentation.
