Up for sale, a 1994 Fender Stratocaster Classical model STCL-100 in near-mint, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with a hardshell case. This very rare, non-catalog model “Made in Japan” Strat was produced in very limited quantities during the mid ‘90s, easily ranking among the most unique Strats ever produced, designed for nylon strings and featuring a Mike Christian piezo under-saddle pickup. Interestingly, this is not the only nylon-string Strat ever released, as the nylon string Yngwie Malmsteen signature model STCL-YM (also produced by Fender Japan), boasts a very similar feature set.
Tonewoods include an ash body and a maple neck capped with a thick slab rosewood fretboard; unplugged, this Strat is quite resonant, with a smooth midrange warmth accentuated by the nylon strings and faithfully captured by the Mike Christian piezo pickup. This guitar is a real marvel, providing a faithful plugged-in classical guitar approximation. The sound has an open, airy quality, with a silky growl from the wound strings and a sonorous, vocal quality to the plain strings. There’s simply something very unique about the feel of nylon strings under the fingertips with a Strat neck in the palm. Weighing 7lbs 14oz, this Stratocaster has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar with hard tension nylon strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a moderately chunky C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .865” deep at the 1st fret and .965” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a 15” radius, and the medium jumbo fretwire is pristine, playing cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The bone nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width. On the headstock, the Gotoh tuning machines function reliably, with uncommon amber buttons, and the “Japan” text and N-prefix serial is present above the four-bolt neck plate.
Electronics comprise the Mike Christian piezo system powered by an internal 9V battery and governed by a solitary Volume knob. The jack cup is on the back of the body, and the six-point vibrato actuates smoothly, enabling some unique classical vibrato usage that is otherwise impossible without outboard effects.
The gloss Natural finish is remarkably clean, exhibiting just a couple faint marks in the clear coat on the back. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is immaculate.
A black tolex hardshell case is included.
