Up for sale, a 1994 Fender "Extrad" Custom Edition Stratocaster '62 vintage reissue with a nitro lacquer Burgundy Mist gloss finish and all USA Fender electronics. The Extrad Fender Japan instruments are the most sought after and excruciatingly rare instruments ever produced at Fujigen during Fender Japan's golden age, designed for the domestic Japanese market and rarely seen in their country of origin or elsewhere.

A true custom shop offering, The Extrad instruments (in later years rebranded as Custom Edition) were ostensibly made to order one-offs with features that paralleled Fender's USA Custom Shop output. Established by Makoto Sugimoto, who benefitted from a quarter century of experience in R&D, custom guitar building, and engineering at Fujigen, the Extrad/Custom Edition instruments were produced by a small team of expert craftspeople, representing Fender Japan's absolute best. This premium instrument line was first offered in 1986 and was retired in 1994, and even among the tiny Custom Edition production totals, custom color examples are virtually unseen, with most made in Sunburst.

This particular Custom Edition '62 Stratocaster is stunning in every detail, with a solid alder body, maple neck, and thick slab rosewood fretboard with extremely dynamic and varied grain, appearing almost like cocobolo. The trio of pickups have been upgraded to more recent Custom Shop-stickered black bobbin single coils, presumably Fat 50s given their metered output and tonal response. Lively, sparkling, and very dynamic, the sound is distinct and vital in every position on the five-way switch. The bridge pickup has bite and bounce, with a woody, percussive middle pickup, and round, bell-like chime at the neck. The guitar weighs 7lbs 14oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The maple neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with very full shoulders in every register and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .965" at the 12th. The rosewood slab fretboard has been professionally refretted with flawless medium jumbo fretwire, and the board has a modern 9 1/2" radius. The bone nut measures 1.650" in width, and there's a small cigarette burn on the headstock edge. The Gotoh-made Kluson-style tuning machines turn very smoothly and hold pitch well, even with liberal vibrato use, and the Custom Edition badge is present. The "Made in Japan" text and Q-prefix serial are visible above the four-bolt neck plate, and the neck heel and pocket have matching order numbers.

The electronics all function as intended with the traditional Strat control array. The harness boasts original USA-made CTS pots which date to the 31st week of '94, along with a Sprague Orange Drop tone cap. The more recent trio of black bobbin Fender Custom Shop pickups feature their original stickers on the bobbins and retain the original uniformly aged pickup covers. The stock knobs and three-ply mint green pickguard round out the plastics, and the hardware includes a premium Fender vibrato unit with a full-size zinc block for optimal resonance and sustain. The vibrato actuates very easily with three springs for deeper dives and subtle gestures, and the chrome plating on the bridge and jack cup is notably clean.

The nitro lacquer finish is a shade of Burgundy Mist used by Fender Japan in the early '90s, mixing in some salmon hues and reminiscent of an aged Fiesta Red. There are two notable spots of wear through the gloss on top, one from deep pick marks, and the other likely from some kind of wrist jewelry. There is one spot of buckle rash at the edge of the belly contour and some additional nicks and minor marks on the body parameter and on top behind the bridge. The nitro lacquer on the neck profile is silky smooth and nigh flawless with gentle ambering.

A form-fit Japanese faux leather gigbag is included.
