Up for sale, a 1993 Orville by Gibson Les Paul Standard model LPS-59R in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. This flame top Honey Burst '59 reissue Les Paul is an absolute stunner and the top-tier reissue model offered in the "Orville by Gibson" line with factory-installed USA Gibson '57 Classic PAF humbuckers. Made exclusively for the Japanese market and seldom seen outside its country of origin, this Orville is an official Gibson-licensed guitar and a result of a partnership between Gibson USA and their Japanese distributor Yamano Gakki. Named after Gibson's founder, Orville Gibson, this discontinued Orville model was crafted at the Fujigen factory.
This guitar delivers everything you want in a good Les Paul, with a solid mahogany body and neck, solid maple cap, glued-in long tenon neck joint, and a pair of factory-installed Gibson USA humbuckers. This early pair of '57 Classic PAFs humbuckers are wax potted with Alnico II magnets, retaining the original PAF stickers on the baseplates. The pickups in this Orville translate the instrument's clear acoustic voice into a powerful array of big, crisp voicings. The bridge pickup has the growl, midrange cut, and dynamic clarity you’d expect, while the neck pickup is girthy and thick while still retaining enough clarity and definition to pair with your favorite fuzz box without getting muddy. Additionally, the pickups clean up decently when backing off the volume a touch, and the tone controls are equally as responsive. This Orville weighs 9lbs 4oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The mahogany neck has a '50s-style C-shaped profile, very representative of a ’59 shape and just shy of “baseball bat heft, measuring .875" deep at the 1st fret and .995" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features flared trapezoid inlay and original vintage-style frets with binding nibs (matching Gibson spec). The frets have their full factory height and ample meat, practically pristine and playing easily in every register. The neck is straight with a responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod, and the original bone nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The nickel-plated Kluson-style tuners are intact on the headstock, which has the correct "open book" shape and "Orville by Gibson" pearl inlay. The serial number is also inked in the correct font on the back of the headstock with a single digit for the year spaced apart from the rest of the serial, just like a genuine 1959 (or Custom Shop R9) model.
All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup and a three-way pickup selector toggle. Solder joints are untouched, and the full-size pots date to July of '93. The neck pickup cavity also reveals the vintage-correct long tenon joint, ensuring the best body/neck connection for maximizing sustain and resonance. Plastics comprise the quartet of amber bonnet knobs, cream pickup rings and pickguard, and the nickel-plated hardware has light surface patina, including the ABR-1 bridge and corresponding stoptail.
The Honey Burst gloss finish highlights the lively curly bookmatched flame figuring which extends evenly across the top (veneer over a solid carved maple cap). Exceedingly well-kept, cosmetic wear on this guitar is limited to some faint scuffs on the top along the treble side of the pick path, just a few light marks and tiny dings on the back and lower bout perimeter. The clear factory protective plastic is still intact on the rear control cavity cover, a testament to the sparingly little use this guitar has seen in the past three decades. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
