Up for sale, a 1993 Ibanez S Series model S540 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag. Expertly crafted at the Fujigen factory in Japan, this S Series Ibanez features a sleek, contoured S-style mahogany body, a maple neck with a Wizard profile carve, and the original trio of Quantum pickups.
The HSH pickup complement includes Quantum QM1 and QM2 humbuckers and a QMS1 middle position single coil. The ceramic magnet humbuckers are bold and powerful with excellent articulation, delivering pristine cleans and taking gain notably well. The QMS1 single coil in the middle position is equal parts punchy and snappy, contrasting nicely with the humbuckers on the five-way switch. This Ibanez is featherweight at 6lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, slinky action, and spot-on intonation.
The one-piece quartersawn maple neck sports Ibanez’s Wizard profile, a slender D-shaped carve with generous shoulders in every register, measuring .700” deep at the 1st fret and .835” at the 12th. The 22-fret maple fretboard features a 17” radius, abalone oval inlay, a “Custom Made” inlay at the 21st fret, and stock jumbo fretwire. The frets are practically perfect, with well-rounded crowns, only exhibiting a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-7. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the gold Top-Lok locking nut measures 43mm (just a hair over 1 11/16") in width. The headstock features original gold “Made in Japan” stamped tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. On the back of the headstock, the F3-prefix serial dates this instrument to 1993.
On the body, all of the electronics function as intended, with a five-way blade pickup selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls for the HSH pickup array. The harness features one original full-size Japanese pot, dating to March, ‘93, and one replacement USA-made CTS pot. The gold plating on the hardware is quite clean with only modest surface patina, including the knobs, pickup rings and double locking Lo-Pro Edge tremolo.
The gloss Jade Metallic finish exhibits an area of buckle rash on the back central to the waist and a handful of minor nicks and finish scratches on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the perimeter and lower bout on the back. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile has been buffed to a semi-gloss through contact with the palm, with a scant few shallow dings that are nigh imperceptible to the palm and have no impact on playability.
The original Ibanez-branded faux leather gigbag is included.
