Up for sale, a 1992 Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case and factory paperwork. Designed to capture the finer points of the 1960 Les Paul Standard, the '92 Classic Plus is a one-year intersection of features and the height of the Classic line. The "Plus" tier of the Classic model introduced for the 1992 model year, is differentiated by a premium heavily figured bookmatched tiger flame top, while also retaining the "Les Paul Model" silkscreen text on the headstock face (the text was modified to "Les Paul Classic" the next year, to the unanimous dismay of vintage Les Paul aficionados).

This particular Classic Plus features a Trans Amber gloss nitro lacquer finish, highlighting deep, three-dimensional flame that extends across every inch of the top. It's no coincidence that this Les Paul was ordered by Gibson's Japanese distributor Yamano, as Gibson's USA-made guitars distributed via Yamano are often considered among their best, featuring the highest quality woods picked for Gibson's discerning Japanese audience.

The Classic Plus boasts many features that are notable to the golden age of Les Paul production, such as a '50s headstock shape, thinner binding in the cutaway, push-in tuner bushings, ABR-1 bridge, and a slimmer 1960 neck profile. Weighing 9lbs 12oz with a solid (non-weight relieved) mahogany body and carved maple cap, this guitar has plenty of power and cut, offering healthy natural sustain which translates well through the pickups. The pickups in question are a pair of upgraded Gibson '57 Classic PAFs with a touch of natural patina on the original nickel covers. Substantially more vintage-correct than the ceramic magnet pickups Gibson inexplicably paired with the Classics from the factory, these PAFs capture the sweet, singing tonalities of Gibson's golden age, with a clear and harmonically complex bridge position and a rich, meaty neck pickup sound that still retains clarity and a sharp note attack. We've had this Les Paul Classic Plus professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a very slender ‘60s-style C-shaped profile carve with modest shoulder and a fast, effortless feel, measuring .755” deep at the 1st fret and .865” at the 12th. The rosewood fretboard boasts cream binding, un-greened trapezoid inlays with some dimension in the pearloid, and original frets which retain their full factory height. The frets are in great shape with well-rounded crowns, showing only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock has the “Les Paul Model” script, and the original push-in bushing Gibson Deluxe tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The truss rod cover has also been replaced with a blank two-ply variety, more in-line with '50s Gibson spec.

All of the electronics work as they should, and the upgraded '57 Classic PAF humbucker pair is wired to the original harness, with CTS pots that date to the 23rd week of '92. Both pickups retain clean PAF stickers on their baseplates, and the bridge pickup cavity is stamped with the "Classic Plus" model designation. Hardware includes the nickel humbucker covers and stopbar, with a chrome ABR-1 bridge. Plastics comprise the cream single-ply pickguard, pickup rings, switch surround, and quartet of amber bonnet knobs.

The high gloss nitro lacquer Transparent Amber finish highlights an extremely heavily figured bookmatched maple cap, and the flame is so dimensional that its texture can be faintly felt through the lacquer. This is an exceedingly well-kept Les Paul, with cosmetic wear limited to an extremely small area of buckle worming on the back central to the lower bout and a handful of faint scratches in the clear coat on the body as a whole. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with a shallow nick behind fret 12 that has no impact on playability.

The original brown Gibson USA hardshell case with pink plush interior is included, along with the Gibson/Yamano factory paperwork.
