1992 BC Rich Mockingbird Bass model MB-857, Vintage PJ Back Black, Japan

Up for sale, a 1992 B.C. Rich Mockingbird Bass model MB-857 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Few basses make a statement quite like a B.C. Rich, and this sleek Mockingbird is sure to impress. Made in Japan and rarely seen outside its country of origin, this bass features a maple body and maple neck capped with a rosewood fretboard.  The stock Gotoh-made PJ pickup configuration offers both the ample thump and power of a split coil Precision neck pickup and the midrange cut and grind of a Jazz pickup at the bridge. This Mockingbird bass weighs 8lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, comfortable action, and spot-on intonation.

The maple neck has a moderately slender C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders and a hair more overall heft further up the fretboard, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th. The thick slab rosewood fretboard has a 12” radius, features dot inlay and retains the pristine stock jumbo fretwire. This bass plays cleanly in all registers with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The scale length is 34”, and the carved bone nut measures 1 9/16” in width. The headstock has a rosewood veneer and “R” inlay, and the “Made in Japan” Gotoh tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The back of the headstock retains the serialized R-prefix foil sticker.

On the body, the electronics function as intended, with dedicated Volume knobs for each pickup, a Master tone knob, and three-way pickup selector toggle. The heavy-duty top-loader Gotoh bridge has clean black plating, matching the trio of original black knurled knobs. The control cavity cover on the back of the instrument even retains the protective factory film, indicative of the limited use this bass has seen in the last 30 years.

Cosmetic wear on the gloss Black finish includes a handful of light scratches and dings in the clear coat on the body as a whole, particularly concentrated at the bass-side lower bout on the back. There is a small finish chip at the tip of the treble-side horn, and a small patch of buckle rash on the back central to the waist. The satin finish on the neck profile is immaculate and feels fast in the palm.

A gigbag is included.
