Up for sale, a 1991 Moon JJ-5 five-string bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original gigbag. A boutique Japanese bass brand rarely seen outside its country of origin, Moon basses are prized for their high quality craftsmanship, played by legends including Marcus Miller and Larry Graham, who had a signature version of the JJ-5 model. This PGM-era JJ-5 boasts a mahogany body, hard maple neck, thick slab ebony fretboard, active Bartolini pickups, and gold hardware.Thick and growly with plenty of definition, the Moon JJ-5 has tons of low end power and oomph, with an expressive midrange quality and ample EQ control given the active Bartolini preamp. Rolling back the treble offers a wide, deep rumble with smooth thump, and the tone stays very articulate thanks to the glassy, immediate response of the slab ebony fretboard. This bass weighs 9lbs 14oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-125 roundwound strings. The maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with full shoulders in every register, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .920” at the 12th. The thick slab ebony fretboard has stock medium jumbo fretwire which exhibits light wear on the crowns of frets 1-7. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 1 7/8“ in width. The headstock sports a gold Moon decal and small PGM (Professional Guitar Manufacturer) logo, and the back of the headstock retains the small transparent “Custom Built by PGM” sticker. The gold-plated clover-button tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch. The Bartolini TBT preamp features dual Volume knobs as well as active Treble and Bass knobs with center detent pots. Cosmetic wear on the Natural satin finish is limited to a number of minor dings along the lower bout perimeter and some buckle worming across the back. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile is flawless. The original Moon-branded gigbag is included.
