Up for sale, a 1991 Gibson Chet Atkins CEC chambered acoustic electric classical guitar in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, CoA, and hangtags. The uncommon CEC is among Gibson’s most unique ever produced, designed in collaboration with Atkins and played extensively by Mark Knopfler. This CEC (even rarer than the CE) is differentiated by its wide 2” nut width, more in-line with a traditional classical guitar nut width. This particular instrument was sold through Gibson's Japanese distributor Yamano; Gibson’s USA-made guitars distributed via Yamano are often considered to be among their best, featuring the highest quality woods, picked for Gibson’s discerning Japanese audience.
For players that seek the feel and tonality of a traditional nylon string classical guitar, but with a feedback resistant body and articulate electric pickup system, the Chet Atkins CE is one of the only, and arguably the best, options available. The guitar weighs 7lbs 2oz with the traditional tonewood combination of a solid spruce top and mahogany body, chambered for a more natural acoustic resonance. This Gibson benefits from a professional setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with normal tension nylon strings and comfortable classical action.
The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium D-shaped profile carve, measuring .850” deep at the 1st fret and .895” at the 9th. On the rosewood fretboard, the medium jumbo fretwire is pristine, playing cleanly up the 25 1/2” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The bone nut measures a full 2” in width. On the slotted headstock, the Gibson-branded strip tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with clean gold plating, engraved baseplates, and pearloid buttons.
The "soundhole" features gold script with both Atkins' name and a traditional Gibson script logo, and the one-piece mahogany body has a subtle belly contour so as to be more ergonomic. All the electronics function as intended, with the active preamp providing a great deal of tonal flexibility. There are individual thumbwheels inside the control cavity to individually balance string volume to taste, along with larger Volume and Tone wheels framed in the guitar's gold control plate on the upper bout. The center detent Tone wheel can swing between full, bassy and warm all the way to snappy and bright, with a wide sweep and inverted functionality, getting fuller and bassier from 5-10. Cosmetic wear is limited to just a few minor marks on the body as a whole, while the gloss on the neck profile is pristine.
The original Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case with pink plush interior is included, along with the CoA and all Yamano hangtags, contained within a Gibson/Yamano leather booklet.
