Up for sale, a 1991 Fender Thinline Telecaster ‘72 vintage reissue model TN72-70 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order, featuring an extremely rare, non-catalog gloss finish. Crafted at the Fujigen factory during the golden age of Fender Japan production, this “Made in Japan” Telecaster features an ash body, with black grain filler that accentuates the dynamic grain of this particular tonewood. The stock pair of Wide Range humbuckers are more tonally faithful to the original design than many later Fender reissues, and these pickups are fat and full-sounding, while still having a distinctive top end character and excellent articulation. This Telecaster is featherweight at 7lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The one-piece maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with well-rounded shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .910” at the 12th. The fretboard has a vintage-spec 7 1/4“ radius and practically perfect original slender fretwire that shows only a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-2. This Tele plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width, upgraded to a piece of bone for ideal sustain and note clarity. The headstock sports a bullet truss rod, and the stock set of Kluson-style tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The tiny K-prefix serial is present beneath the block logo on the headstock face, and the “Made in Japan” text is just above the three-bolt, F-embossed neck plate with micro-tilt adjustment. All of the electronics function as intended, with the stock Wide Range humbuckers wired to the upgraded harness with cloth-covered leads, USA-made 500k CTS pots, and a Sprague Orange Drop tone capacitor, governed by a three-way pickup selector switch and Master Volume and Tone controls. The chrome-plated hardware is quite clean, including the flat-topped knurled knobs, Fender-embossed pickup covers, and bridge with block saddles. The three-ply pearloid pickguard shows some light yellowing and requisite pick scuffing across the strum path. The finish is nearly opaque on the body perimeter, while dark grain filler used to accentuate the ash on the top and back is similar in application to other non-catalog Fender Japan instruments of the era. This is a well-kept guitar, with cosmetic wear limited to a few minor dings on the back and along the body perimeter, with some additional finish wear through the otherwise dark gloss adjacent to the rear strap button. The neck profile retains its smooth ambered gloss.A padded faux leather gigbag is included.
