Up for sale, a 1991 Fender ExTrad Custom Edition Jazz Bass ‘62 vintage reissue model JB62-128 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case, hangtags, and case candy. The ExTrad Fender Japan instruments were the most sought after and excruciatingly rare instruments produced at Fujigen during Fender Japan’s golden age, designed for the Japanese domestic market and rarely seen in their country of origin or elsewhere. Premium features include USA pickups, CTS pots, vintage-spec’d hardware, and a nitro lacquer finish.

A true Custom Shop offering, the Extrad/Custom Edition instruments were ostensibly made to order one-offs with features that paralleled Fender's USA Custom Shop output. Established by Makoto Sugimoto, who benefitted from a quarter century of experience in R&D, custom guitar building, and engineering at Fujigen, the Extrad/Custom Edition instruments were produced by a small team of expert craftspeople, representing Fender Japan's absolute best. This premium instrument line was first offered in 1986 and was retired in 1994.

Tonewoods include an ash body, maple neck, and slab rosewood fretboard, yielding a sound with natural midrange authority and clear note attack. The USA-made pickup pair delivers smooth growl and midrange burp, with the treble grind of a set of fresh roundwound 45-100 strings. The neck pickup has a thick, woody sound, delivering ample thump, particularly with the Tone knob backed off to taste. This Custom Edition Jazz Bass weighs 8lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with easy-playing action and accurate intonation.

The gloss Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is a rare option for Fender Japan, seen only on the rarest, highest-tiered models, and the burst highlights the particularly dynamic grain of the uncommon ash body (most ‘62-spec’d Jazz Basses use alder). There is some buckle wear central to the back, a few small finish chips on the lower bout perimeter, and a handful of dings on the body as a whole consistent with decades of careful usage. The ambered nitro gloss on the neck profile is smooth and clean, with a few shallow marks along the profile length and a cigarette burn on the headstock edge.

The original black tolex hardshell case is included, along with the hangtags, owners manual, polish cloth, cable and finger rest.
