Up for sale, a circa 1990 Moon JJ-4 Jazz Bass fretless bass in perfect working order. A boutique Japanese brand rarely seen outside of its country of origin, these expertly crafted instruments have been played by legends like Larry Graham and Steve Lukather. This particular Moon features a walnut body, maple neck, and slab lined ebony fingerboard.Thick and growly with plenty of definition, this JJ-4 has tons of low end power and oomph, with an expressive midrange quality and plenty of tonal flexibility thanks to the passive Treble and Bass Tone knobs. Rolling back the Treble knob offers a wide, deep rumble with smooth thump, and the tone stays glassy and immediate thanks to the ebony fingerboard. This Bass weighs 10lbs 10oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar bar with 45-100 roundwound strings, easy-playing action and optimal intonation. The maple neck has a very slender C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulder and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .755 deep at the 1st “fret” and .885” deep at the octave. The thick slab ebony fingerboard is lined, and there’s just a hint of string wear on the ebony beneath the A and D strings. This bass plays cleanly in all registers up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 1/2“ in width. The headstock sports a gold Moon waterslide decal, and the gold tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch with clover buttons. All the electronics function as intended, and the two single coil pickups are replacements, more in-line with vintage Fender Jazz Bass pickups and governed by dedicated Volume knobs and global Treble and Bass knobs. The stock harness includes a quartet of full-size 500k Japanese-made pots. The gold hardware includes the dome-topped knurled knobs (one is a modern replacement) and the top-loader bridge, which has light surface patina. The treble-side finger rest is an addition, and there are a few small, doweled mounting holes adjacent to the neck pickup for a removed pickup cover. The satin finish highlights the broad grain of the walnut body, and cosmetic wear including playwear on top between the pickups, an area of buckle rash on the back, and a number of minor dings and scratches on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the lower bout body edge. The smooth satin finish on the neck profile feels lightning fast in the palm, with one shallow mark behind fret 11 that has no impact on playability. The original Moon-branded faux leather padded gigbag is included.
