Up for sale, a 1990 Gretsch Sparkle Jet 6129 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Made in Japan at the Fujigen factory, this iteration of the iconic Gretsch Duo Jet platform features a custom Champagne Sparkle finish on the top courtesy of Marty Bell.
Tonewoods include a chambered mahogany body and a carved maple top, paired with a bound mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard, yielding ample natural acoustic honk and bark. The stock pair of Filter’Tron humbuckers have a punchy, sparkling bridge position sound that has plenty of muscle and breadth. The neck pickup is fat and smooth, with a distinctive thickness and grunt that retains enough clarity for complex chording. This Gretsch weighs 8lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The mahogany neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve with modest shoulders at the nut, gaining a hair more heft and roundness further up the fretboard, measuring .795” deep at the 1st fret and .915” at the 12th. The extremely dark rosewood fretboard has pearloid “hump block” inlay and has been refretted with flawless medium jumbo fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24.6“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16” in width, carved from bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock sports a horseshoe inlay and Gretsch logo, along with a set of brand new chrome Gotoh tuning machines which match the footprint and button style of the originals.
All of the electronics work as they should, with a three-way pickup selector, dedicated Volume knobs for each pickup, a Master Tone, and a Master Volume on the treble side body horn. Hardware includes the chrome-plated trapeze tailpiece and G arrow knobs, along with the unique floating six-saddle bridge used by Gretsch in this era, complete with a carved ebony base. Plastics comprise the original pair of transparent pickup surrounds (one of which has a small repair) and a replacement elevated lucite pickguard. The serialized label is present in the control cavity, and the original full-sized Japanese pots date to April, 1990.
The Champagne Sparkle finish on top has deep, dimensional metalflake, recently (and flawlessly) executed by Marty Bell and framed by the original ambered multi-ply binding. The dark brown walnut finish on the back and neck is original, with various dings and finish scuffs, as well as buckle rash on the back and finish chipping along the back body edge. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss, with a few shallow marks along the profile length that aren't distracting to the palm while fretting.
The original dark gray tolex hardshell case is included.
