Up for sale, a 1990 Greco model SA-75 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Produced in Japan's famed Fujigen factory (the same factory perhaps best known for their production of Orville, Fender Japan, and Gretsch instruments along with a host of others over the years), this guitar is very faithful to the early 1960s Gibson ES-335 in cosmetic appointments, feel, and most importantly tone. The guitar was produced during the "Mint Collection" era, and the SA-75 has the same top tier electronics and high level of craftsmanship as its predecessor, the SA-700.
Featuring all maple semi-hollow body construction with a one-piece mahogany neck, bound rosewood fretboard and long neck tenon, this tonewood complement yields a sound with both warmth and detail. Channeled through the original PAF-style humbuckers, the guitar produces a sweet, singing tone with great harmonics. The bridge pickup is clear and open, with plenty of growl, while the neck produces warm, round jazz tonalities with enough clarity and cut to satisfy blues players when pushing a tube amp into overdrive.
Loaded with vintage-accurate touches that reference a vintage Gibson ES model, the SA-75 is faithful down to details including the oval label in the bass side F hole, patent number on the bottom of the ABR-1-style bridge, and "Mickey Mouse" ear body cutaways. And while the Greco guitars were never subject to any legal action from Gibson, they fall under the umbrella of "lawsuit" instruments, due to their reverence and accuracy to their USA-made counterparts. The mahogany neck has a slender '60s-style C-shaped profile carve with moderate shoulder and an effortless feel, measuring .820" deep at the 1st fret and .900" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard is an extremely dark, tight-grained cut of this particular tonewood with small block inlay and flawless original medium jumbo fretwire. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the Kluson-style tuning machines turn very smoothly with transparent keystone buttons that match how the earliest Gibson buttons have aged in an uncanny way.
All of the electronics work as they should, with a traditional ES-335 control array, and hardware includes the ABR-1-style bridge and corresponding stopbar. The nickel plating is in great shape, with a light dusting of patina. The oval label visible through the bass-side F hole notes the SA-75 model.
The Cherry gloss finish is extremely vibrant, with just a few minor nicks and light finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body as a whole. The pickguard mounting bracket has been repositioned, and an extra strap button hole has been added on the bass-side body cutaway. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss with a few scattered marks on the profile length.
