Up for sale, a 1987 Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster model ST72-86DSC, finished in Sonic Blue and hand-signed by Yngwie. Here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar we've been lucky enough to have virtually every permutation of the Yngwie Signature Strat model pass through our hands, and this is far and away the most unique iteration we've ever encountered. Ostensibly a one-off given the Order Made number on the body (a program for special order custom features which existed during the Fugigen factory era of Fender Japan production), this Stratocaster features a reverse body finished in original greened-out Sonic Blue. And did we mention that Yngwie signed it?
The guitar features a pair of USA-made DiMarzio HS-3 (DP117) stacked single coil pickups in the neck and bridge positions, with Fender Japan's ST-Current single coil in the middle position. The Dimarzio DP117s offers hum-free performance with a broad low end that's warm and tight with a smooth, glassy treble response. These qualities combine perfectly with a heavily distorted amp, staying clear and defined, and the DP117 boasts a staggered pole piece design. Weighing 7lbs 9oz and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, we've dialed in this Yngwie Strat with low action, accurate intonation, and 10-46 strings.
The maple neck has a slender, shred-worthy C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders in every register, measuring .800” deep at the 1st fret and .905” at the 12th. The slender frets on the 10" radius fretboard are practically perfect, and the board is more shallowly scalloped compared to later examples. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone for optimal note clarity and sustain. The large '70s-style headstock has the correct block logo, dual string trees and chrome Gotoh tuning machines. The "Made in Japan" text and L-prefix serial number are present above the four-bolt Fender-embossed neck plate. The factory ST72-86DSC model stamp is intact on the neck heel, and the neck pocket retains the body's original shade of Sonic Blue with a factory Order Made number and ST62L designation, noting a left-handed body.
All of the electronics work as they should with the stock pickup configuration comprising a pair USA-made Dimarzio DP117s in the neck and bridge positions, with an "ST-Current" middle pickup. The harness includes a five-way pickup selector switch and two original full-size pots which date to '87, along with a new CTS Volume pot. The Dimarzio pickup covers, knobs, and three-ply white pickguard show sparingly little aging, while the middle pickup cover has notably yellowed. The chrome plating on the hardware is clean, and the guitar has a vibrato with a full-size diecast block, responding effortlessly for deep dives and expressive warbles.
Yngwie's signature is present on the treble-side body horn, and the signature is bold and unfaded with his typical "Play Loud!" subtext. The Sonic Blue gloss finish has greened significantly, and this guitar was at one time strung left-handed, with an additional strap button hole on the “treble side” body horn which has been doweled and touched up. There is also pick scuffing on the bass side of the guard, and wear is otherwise limited to some additional minor marks and light finish scratches on the body as a whole. The gloss finish on the neck profile is nigh flawless.
A gigbag is included.
