Up for sale, a 1990 Fender Custom Shop '54 Stratocaster in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original tweed hardshell case and hangtags. A very early Custom Shop example when production totals were a fraction of today's output, this Stratocaster is a lively and vital-sounding instrument produced at the top tier of Fender's output in this era.
Blending vintage tonal properties and a couple modern player-friendly features, this Strat boasts an ash body, one-piece maple neck, jumbo fretwire, a 9.5" fretboard radius, and the original trio of black bobbin single coils. Chiming, sparkling top end is on tap in every selection via the three-way pickup selector switch, and while the bridge pickup has ample sparkle and cut, the neck position single coil is inherently fatter and fuller while retaining great articulation and a bell-like top end. Acoustically the instrument is very resonant, and striking a chord causes the whole guitar to vibrate with a liveliness typically reserved for genuine '50s examples. The guitar weighs 7lbs 8oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation.
The maple neck has a medium C profile carve at the nut, with particularly round shoulders in every register and significant heft as you travel up the fingerboard, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .970" at the 12th. The original jumbo fretwire has tons of meat with perfectly rounded crowns, showing just a hint of wear on frets 1-3. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock features both a vintage-correct Strat decal and early Custom Shop logo on the reverse side. The neck heel is stamped May 15, 1990, and both the neck heel and pocket retain their Custom Shop stamps, along with an additional stamp below the V-prefix four-bolt neck plate. The truss rod not is notably recessed, yet responsive and optimally adjusted.
All of the electronics are original, with untouched solder on the CTS pots which date to the 25th week of 1990 and a three-way pickup selector switch governing the original trio of black bobbin single coils. All of the hardware is original, with notably clean chrome plating, and all of the original plastics are intact too. Cosmetic wear is limited to light pick scuffing across the one-ply pickguard, and the gloss two-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer gloss is notably well-kept. There are a few light finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss on the body, one tiny finish chip on the back lower bout body edge, and just a couple additional minor marks on the body as a whole. The lightly ambered gloss on the neck profile is flawless.
The original tweed hardshell case and hangtags are included (Fender's '54 Custom Shop Strats came with the 1957 Stratocaster booklet in this era).
