Up for sale, a 1990 Epiphone Japan TB-90 Thunderbird bass, thoroughly upgraded and in perfect working order, complete with a brand new Epiphone hardshell case. As its name would suggest, this bass thunders and growls with the best, producing great low end thump and power from the humbucker pickups. Faithful to the Gibson Thunderbird IV of the early '60s, this bass was offered exclusively to the Japanese domestic market, produced at the Terada factory. This bass boasts the uncommon cosmetic combination of an Ebony gloss finish and nickel hardware.

Acoustically resonant and lightweight at only 8lbs 6lbs, this Thunderbird is strung with fresh 45-105 roundwound strings which ensure a tone that's warm and vibrant, with equal parts low end punch and top end grind. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Thunderbird TB-90 has comfortable action and solid intonation.

The neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut with notable roundness and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .980" at the 12th. The rosewood slab fretboard features pearloid dot inlay and original medium jumbo frets have ample meat and height, playing cleanly in every register up the 34" scale. The neck is straight, and the truss rod is responsive and optimall adjusted. The carved bone nut measures 1 1/2" in width. On the headstock, the nickel-plated long stem clover button tuners perfectly match vintage spec, turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The face of the headstock is faithful to the classic Gibson shape, with a carved, three-dimensional appearance topped off with an "Epiphone" truss rod cover. The inked J90-prefix serial number dates to 1990.

All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume controls for each pickup and a Master Tone. The pickups are a modern pair, faithful to the original Gibson design (not to be confused with Gibson's overwound modern reissues), and these pickups have enough output to push an amp just hard enough while retaining clarity and a sweet, dynamic character. The three-point nickel-plated bridge is also a modern substitution, as is the custom-made pickguard with gold Thunderbird graphic, matching the gold inserts on the reflector cap knobs.

Cosmetic wear on the gloss Ebony finish includes buckle rash on the upper bout on the back, and some additional dings and light finish scratches largely on the back and body perimeter. There is one additional filled strap button hole on the back adjacent to the current location, and a few small doweled touched-up mounting holes on top adjacent to the neck pickup and behind the bridge. The gloss finish on the neck profile is smooth and clean.

A brand new Epiphone Thunderbird black tolex case with a form-fit interior is included.
