Up for sale, a 1989 Orville by Gibson Firebird V model FB-VS in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order with a traditional Vintage Sunburst gloss finish, complete with the original form-fit gigbag and hangtag. Differentiated from the standard Orville-branded instruments, the "Orville by Gibson" guitars represented the highest tier of Japanese construction, outfitted from the factory with USA Gibson pickups. Made exclusively for the Japanese market and rarely seen outside its country of origin, this Orville is an official Gibson-licensed guitar and a result of a partnership between Gibson USA and their Japanese distributor Yamano Gakki. Named after Gibson's founder, Orville Gibson, this long ago discontinued Orville model was crafted at the Terada factory.
Featuring set neck construction with a solid mahogany body and neck, the instrument's warmth and natural sustain translates faithfully through a pair of Gibson's hot Firebird pickups. The tone is rich and full, with plenty of midrange content and an aggressive treble bite. Particularly lightweight at 7lbs 12oz , this Gibson has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings and spot-on intonation.
The mahogany neck has a modestly slender C-shaped profile carve with a hair more heft and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .825" deep at the 1st fret and .905" at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard is a dark cut of this tonewood inlaid with pearloid trapezoids and retaining the original medium jumbo frets which show no wear and have well-rounded crowns. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the scale length is 24 3/4". The headstock sports the original set of nickel banjo tuners, which turn very smoothly, hold pitch well, and are a vintage-correct option no longer available on current standard line Gibson Firebird models. The "Orville by Gibson" silkscreened truss rod cover is intact, and the inked G89-prefix serial dates to 1989.
On the body, all of the electronics are stock and work as they should, with individual Volume and Tone controls for each pickup. The pickups feature patent number baseplates, and the solder joints are untouched, with original full-size that date to the July of 1989. The hardware has plenty of shine, with only a light dusting of surface patina on the ABR-1 bridge and stopbar. Plastics include the pickguard with flawless Firebird graphic and a quartet of reflector cap knobs. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Vintage Sunburst finish includes one ding on top of note adjacent to the knobs, and a smaller mark on the back at the treble side waist. Wear is otherwise limited to a few light finish scratches in the clear coat and some pick scuffing on the treble side of the strum path. The gloss finish on the neck profile is flawless.
The original black faux leather form-fit gigbag with Orville by Gibson silkscreen on the case pocket is included. The original hangtag with matching serial is present too.
