1989 Greco Mint Collection EG59 Standard Flame Top Vintage Guitar w/ Seymour Duncan APH-1, Japan Fujigen

+ shipping

Up for sale, a 1989 Greco EG59 Standard in excellent condition and perfect working order, upgraded with a pair of early zebra bobbin Seymour Duncan APH-1 Alnico II humbuckers. Crafted in Japan's famed Fujigen factory as part of Greco's celebrated Mint Collection offered in the '80s, this lawsuit-era LP truly delivers the goods, with attention to vintage Gibson spec. And while no legal action was taken against Greco for these guitars, Gibson did commission the same factory to make their "Orville" line of instruments which were exclusively sold within Japan.

Tonewoods include a solid maple top, mahogany body and a mahogany neck capped with a rosewood fretboard. At 9lbs 15oz, this guitar dishes out plenty of natural sustain and sonic authority, captured faithfully by the upgraded Seymour Duncan APH-1 Alnico II pickups, handwound by Maricela Juarez. Juarez, the “Queen of the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop”, has wound pickups for guitar legends like Eddie Van Halen, George Harrison, and Slash; who notably favored a Juarez-wound APH-1 neck pickup in his personal instruments. The Alnico II magnet construction matches vintage PAF spec, and these pickups offer a tailored midrange, clear, harmonic-rich trebles end and rounded, spongy lows. These humbuckers are highly responsive to pick attack, equally comfortable with rich drive and powerful cleans. This Greco EG59 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action and accurate intonation.

The mahogany neck has a chunky '50s-style C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders, gaining significant heft as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .860” deep at the 1st fret and 1.035” at the 12th. The bound rosewood rosewood fretboard features pearloid trapezoid inlay and stock medium jumbo fretwire which shows only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-4. This Greco plays comfortably in every register with a straight neck and responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. True to classic Gibson spec, the scale length is 24 3/4” and the nut measures 1 11/16” in width. The headstock sports the iconic “open-book” shape, Greco inlay and inked serial number. The original Kluson-style Gotoh tuners turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with the distinctive transparent swirling plastic sharp-edged keystone buttons that match very closely with '50s Gibson spec.

All of the electronics work as intended, with the upgraded USA-made Seymour Duncan humbuckers wired to the original harness with full-size Japanese pots that date to '89. The neck pickup cavity reveals the long tenon neck joint, ensuring optimal resonance and the best connection between the body and neck. Hardware includes the ABR-1-style Tune-o-Matic bridge and corresponding stopbar tailpiece, both of which display consistent patina across their nickel plating. Plastics comprise cream pickup rings, a one-ply pickguard, amber switch tip, and the original quartet of gold bonnet-style knobs; all in excellent condition.

The Cherry Sunburst gloss finish is bright and vibrant, highlighting tight tiger flame that extends liberally across the bookmatched maple veneer over the solid top. Cosmetic wear includes a number of minor dings and scratches, particularly on the back and body perimeter, with an area of light buckle rash central to the waist. An additional strap button hole has been cleanly doweled and touched-up just below the neck heel. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth with the exception of a few minuscule dings that have no impact on playability.

A gigbag is included.
