Up for sale, a 1989 Gibson Explorer '76 vintage reissue in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. Refinished by sparkle maestro Marty Bell in a deep and three-dimensional metalflake Silver Sparkleburst, this guitar is loaded with the original pair of Gibson's Bill Lawrence "circuit board" Super Humbuckers.

With solid mahogany body and neck construction and a rosewood fingerboard, the instrument delivers plenty of natural warmth and sustain which translates faithfully through the pickups. Seen only from 1988-90 in Gibsons, these medium output pickups pair particularly well with this Explorer and handle high gain with ease, delivering an articulate array of tones that can be bright and growly or thick and punchy with the flip of a switch. The guitar weighs 8lbs 6oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation.

The mahogany neck has a slender 60s-style C profile carve with moderate shoulder, lightly rolled fretboard edges, and a long tenon neck joint for optimal sustain and resonance. The profile measures .815" deep at the 1st fret and .885" at the 12th. The slab rosewood fretboard features pearl dot inlay and the medium jumbo frets have plenty of meat and well-rounded crowns, showing no wear. The guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, and the headstock retains the original Grover mini Rotomatic tuning machines. The finish and inlaid Gibson logo on the headstock face is original, while the serial number and "Made in USA" text was faithfully replicated by Marty Bell after the new sparkle finish was applied.

All of the electronics work as they should, with individual Volume controls for each Bill Lawrence Super Humbucker, along with a Master Tone control. The harness has been rewired with more recent USA-made CTS 500k pots, arguably tighter spec'd than the originals. Hardware includes a chrome Nashville bridge and corresponding stopbar tailpiece, and plastics comprise a modern trio of black reflector cap knobs and a new three-ply black pickguard. The metalflake finish is flawless and glossy.

The original hardshell case is included with functional latches, a replacement handle, and gold Gibson silkscreen on the exterior. The case lid is also spray painted "Lynyrd Skynyrd," with a number of vintage backstage passes on the exterior. We can't claim any direct provenance, but the case is sure cool!
